Hundreds of Palestinian women from all over the West Bank celebrated the first annual Women’s Inheritance Day, Tuesday 24.01.2012. The event marked the first step in making this day a special day to remember and support the legal rights of women to their inheritance.
The celebration was organized by The Palestinian Working Woman Society for Development, the Danish Church Aid, the YMCA and Women’s Affairs Center in Gaza, which cooperated together to celebrate a new and important event in the calendar. The celebration was one of many activities that take place under the project entitled ‘Inheritance denied’, which is funded by the European Union.
The celebration, which took place in the Cultural Palace in Ramallah, featured speeches from several stakeholders including Minister Majida Al-Massri, who stressed women’s legal rights, and Mrs. Amal Khreishe, the general director of the PWWSD who spoke about the importance of women’s economic empowerment. The celebration featured Dabkeh, in addition to a play that illustrated the complexity of situations women often find themselves in, as well as proving solutions to how the problem of inheritance can be solved.
Over the past few years, the Palestinian community has seen a sharp increase in the emphasis put on the rights of women and their rightful inheritance. Although this is still a major issue that negatively affect women of all ages, and severely limit their social and economic security, the hosting organizations along with the participants of the project strongly believe that small yet essential steps in the right direction are being accomplished. Securing women’s access to their lawful inheritance is imperative in securing the future of these women and of their families. Ensuring the precedents of these cases is pivotal in pressuring duty bearers to support the struggle for justice for Palestinian women.
We at PWWSD would like to thank all our friends for making the day such a remarkable event, and we are looking forward to continuing to work with you in providing a better future for Palestinian women.
